Last week, Taylor Swift dropped her newest single, Lover, that also titles the name of her newest album coming out this Friday. Lover is the ultimate love song. When you listen, I wouldn't be surprised if you imagined yourself dancing with a partner at a school dance, wedding, or in your own living room. The song is that indicative of slow dancing. I'm reminded of the love songs I grew up listening to.
Since listening to the song I've become kind of obsessed with it. I'm a sucker for a happy love song. There are so many about unrequited love and breakups. This one is ecstatically happy. My heart can't take it.
I've thought about other happy love songs I've listened to in the last couple of years. Music has been there for me my entire life to work through all the pining, heartbreak, and romantic moments of my life. It should be no surprise that I'm a playlist type of person, and that I've burned many a CD for my romantic partners.
A lot of those songs, now, are hard to listen to without thinking of people who are no longer in my life. So I put together a list of songs that remind me of falling in love with my best friend. From out first meeting to asking him to listen to Lover with me, I have songs that chronicle it all.
Lover by Taylor Swift
Right after I listened to this song for the first time, I went to our bedroom and asked if I could play it for him. I'm the romantic of the family, so he took it in stride and let me pull the song up on Youtube so we could listen to TS croon while snuggling on our bed. As he held me tighter and told me he loved me, I knew that he appreciated the gesture, even if he's not the biggest Taylor Swift fan.
Bless The Broken Road by Rascal Flatts
This is the song we danced to at our wedding. I put together a list of songs that I thought would be good to dance to and he danced with me to each one before deciding on this Rascal Flatts classic. My friend choreographed a dance for us and we fumbled our way through it on our wedding night. This is the closest thing we have to a couple's song.
If My Heart Had Wings by Faith Hill
Faith Hill is one of my favorite country singers. I've listened to her since I was a kid. I remember singing and dancing to this song at my parent's house long ago. I downloaded it onto my phone when my husband went on his last deployment before shore duty. Because if my heat had wings, it'd have flown to him every night.
I Get to Love You by Ruelle
This is the first song I ever asked Jon to listen to. I felt so lucky dating him and still feel so very lucky to be married to him. Ruelle has a sweet voice and evokes a gratitude that I'm hard pressed to put into words. I had to have him listen to it.
Amazed by Lonestar
I went with my husband to the Submarine Birthday Ball while we were dating. I made him promise me one dance that night since, if it were up to him, we wouldn't dance at all. Surprisingly, he danced with me twice, when Amazed by Lonestar started playing and he stayed on the dance floor with me.
6'2 by Marie Miller
Before we met, I started listening to this song and hoping I'd meet a great guy soon. I didn't know it at the time, but this song was showing me my future with these lyrics: And can we meet by the 1st of July/ so he'll hold my hand as they light up the sky/ and marry me on an April night...
I met Jon in April of 2016, met his family for the first time in July, and married him in April of 2018.
Like I said, music has been there for me my whole life.
